What can you do with Google+?

Google+ is designed to connect your organization around shared interests, helping you collaborate with customers and team members. Trade insights with Communities, poll your organization, share posts based around topics with your followers in Collections, and more.

Important: This guide covers only the new, web version of Google+.

Set up your profile

Your Google+ profile consists of information about you (such as your name and job title), posts you’ve made to Google+, and more to help people know who you are and what your interests are.

In most cases, your G Suite domain administrator will have already created a profile for you. If they haven't, you can create your own profile. If you don't have access to Google+ at all, contact your admin. They may have to turn it on in the Google Admin console first.

Create a profile

  1. Go to Google+.
  2. Click Join Google+.
  3. Sign in to your G Suite account. Sign in using your work account (does not end in @gmail.com).
  4. Follow the steps on the join Google+ page.

Update your profile

You can update the information in your profile any time.

  1. From the main menu, click Profile.
  2. Click EDIT PROFILE.
  3. Do any of the following actions:
    • Select the Collections or Communities you want to show on your profile page.
    • Type a tagline.
  4. Click Camera photo_camera to change your profile or cover photo.
  5. Click Information info_outline to change your personal information.
  6. Click Save.

Update your personal information

  1. From the main menu, click Profile.
  2. Click your profile name, or click About. You can also go to aboutme.google.com.
  3. In the section you want to update, click Edit edit.

    Note: If the Information info_outline icon appears in a section, you can’t update that content. Contact your admin for permission.

  4. Click OK.

  1. From the main menu, click Settings.
  2. Change any settings.

Changes automatically update and save, unless confirmation is required.

Post and share content

Share insights, collaborate with team members, or get feedback on your ideas with Google+ posts.

In this section, you learn how to:

Share posts

You can choose who you share posts with by sharing posts to Collections, Communities, or with people. When you share a post, anyone who follows you and has permission to see the post can see it in their streams. Posts you share can also show on your profile.

Share a post:

  1. Open a Collection or Community that you belong to, or go to your Home page.
  2. In the bottom right, click Write edit.
  3. Type your post.
  4. (Optional) Do any of the following actions:
    • To share a photo, click Camera photo_camera.
    • To share a link, click Link link.
    • To create a poll, click Poll poll.
    • To share your location, click Location location_on.
  5. Next to your name is the audience you’ll share your post with. (Your administrator may set the default option to your domain). To change who you want to share the post with, click the blue text.
  6. Click POST.

Reshare someone else’s post:

  1. On the post you want to reshare, click Share share.

    Note: If you don't see the Share icon, it means the person who made the post chose to not let people reshare it, or it's in a private Community. You can't share private posts publicly.

  2. Click Google+.

  3. (Optional) Type a post.
  4. Next to your name is the audience you’ll share your post with. (Your admin may set the default option to your domain). To change who you want to share the post with, click the blue text.
  5. Click POST.

Comment on a post

You can comment on your own posts and on posts that other people share. Unless, blocked, anyone who can see the post can also see your comment. To like or agree with something, use the plus_one button.

Comment on a post:

  1. On the post you want to comment on, click Comment comment.

    Note: If you don't see the Comment icon, it means that you don't have permission to comment or comments are turned off.

  2. Type your comment.

  3. Click Post.

Like someone’s post:

Click plus_one. To remove a like, click plus_one again.

Edit or delete a post or comment

Edit or delete a comment or a post you shared:

  1. Click the post or comment you want to edit or delete.
  2. Click More more_vert.
  3. Do one of the following actions:

    • Click Edit post or Edit. Make your changes and click Done or Update.
    • Click Delete or Delete comment. To confirm, click Delete again.

Create Collections

Collections organize posts around a topic. You can create your own Collection, or follow someone else’s. Only one person owns a Collection, and only that person can share or post to the Collection.

Create and share a Collection

  1. From the main menu, click Collections.
  2. Click Yours.
  3. Click Create a collection.
  4. Type a name for your Collection.
  5. Next to Visible to, click the Down arrow arrow_drop_down to choose who can see your Collection. Select your company, the public, your circles, or Custom to select individual people or circles.

    Important: After you set who can see your Collection, you can’t change it.

  6. Click Create.

  7. (Optional) Do any of the following actions:
    • To change the cover photo, click Camera photo_camera.
    • Add a tagline.
    • Change the background color.
  8. Click Save.

Update a Collection

You can customize the appearance and description of your Collections at any time.

  1. Open the Collection you want to edit.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Edit collection.
  3. Do any of the following actions:

    • To change the cover photo, click Camera photo_camera.
    • Change the Collection’s title.
    • Add a tagline.
    • Change the background color.
  4. Click Save.

Delete a Collection

You can delete your Collections at any time. When you delete a Collection, all of the posts in the Collection are deleted.

  1. Open the Collection you want to delete.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Delete collection.

Follow interests

Follow people you know or communities and collections that interest you.

Find and follow a Collection

When you follow someone's Collection, you can see posts they make to the Collection in your stream. You can follow a Collection without following the person who created it.

Find a Collection:

  1. From the main menu, click Collections.
  2. Use the search bar to search for Collections by name or look through the list of featured Collections.
  3. (Optional) Click a Collection to find out more.

Follow a Collection: Once you find a Collection you want to join, click Follow.

Stop following a Collection:

  1. Open the Collection you want to quit following.
  2. Click Following.

Find and join a Community

When you join a Community, you can see posts from that Community in your stream and you can share posts to the Community.

Find a Community:

  1. From the main menu, click Communities.
  2. Use the search bar to search for Communities by name or look through the list of recommended Communities.
  3. (Optional) Click a Community to find out more.

Join a Community:

Click Join (or Ask To Join for Communities that require permission). If you’ve been invited to join a private Community, click Decline or Accept.

Note: If you join a restricted Community (indicated by the building icon business), only people in your domain can see your posts and view membership. People outside your domain can be members of a non-restricted Community.

Leave a Community:

  1. Open the Community you want to leave.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Leave Community.
  3. Click Leave to confirm.

Find and follow people

When you follow someone on Google+, their posts appear in your stream.

  1. Do one of these actions to open the profile of the person you want to follow:
    • Search for their name.
    • Click their photo next to a comment or post.
  2. Click Follow.

When you follow someone, they’re added to your Following circle. To add them to more circles, click Following and select the other circles to add them to.

Stop following someone: Remove them from your Following circle. You can still keep them in other circles.

Create Communities

Create Communities for your project teams or for colleagues with common interests. Several people can own or moderate a Community, and anyone in the Community can post to it.

Create a Community

Create different types of Communities based on your goals. To engage customers and get new ones, create a public Community based on your brand. To share ideas and announcements with your team, create internal Communities.

  1. From the main menu, click Communities.
  2. Click Yours.
  3. Click Create a Community.
  4. Type a name for your Community.
  5. Choose who can see your Community by doing any of the following:

    • Restricting the Community to your domain.
    • Making the Community public or private (non-searchable, invitation only, or searchable, people can ask to join).
    • Specifying if people should ask to join.
  6. Click Done.

Invite people to join a Community

Invite people on Google+:

  1. Open the Community you want to invite someone to.
  2. Click Invite person_add > Invite people on Google+.
  3. Use Search to find people or choose from your circles.
  4. Click Done.
  5. (Optional) Add a message.
  6. Click Post.

Invite people with a link:

If someone you invite doesn’t have a Google Account or a Google+ profile, they can create one.

  1. Open the Community you want to invite someone to.
  2. Click Invite person_add > Invite people with a link.
  3. Turn on Allow invites by link.
  4. Click Copy.
  5. Send the link to the people or groups you want to invite.

If Google+ is limited to your organization, only members of your organization can access the link.

Promote members to moderators or owners of your Community:

  1. Open the Community.
  2. Click More Drive more actions and click Manage members.
  3. Next to the person you want to make a moderator or owner, click More Drive more actions and choose Promote from member to moderator or Promote from moderator to owner.

If you don't want someone to be a moderator or owner of your Community anymore, follow the steps above, but choose Demote from moderator to member or Demote from owner to moderator.

Update a Community

Owners or moderators of Communities can update them at any time. Change the cover photo, title, category filters, and more.

  1. Open the Community.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Edit Community.
  3. Make any of the following changes:

    • Click Camera photo_camera to change the cover photo.
    • Click the title to change it.
    • Click under the title to add or change a tagline.
    • Turn on Ask to join to require that people ask before joining the Community.
    • Turn on Hold posts for review to review posts before they're submitted.
    • Turn on Content controls to use stronger content controls (reduces spam or inappropriate content).
    • Add or change a description.
    • Under Categories, click Add add and type a category name, or click an existing name to change it.
    • Under Links, click Add add and type a URL, or click an existing link to change it.
  4. Click Done.

Remove posts or people

Owners or moderators can remove posts, comments, or people from the Community. If someone leaves your team, you can remove them from the team’s Community.

Remove a post or comment:

  1. Open the post or comment you want to remove from your Community.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Remove comment or Remove post.

Removing a post or comment removes it only from the Community. Posts might still be seen on the creator’s profile or if they were reshared to another Community or Collection.

Remove or ban a person from a Community:

  1. Open the Community.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Manage members.
  3. Next to the person you want to remove or ban, click More more_vert and choose Ban from Community or Remove from Community.

If you remove a person, they leave the Community, but they can join it again if they want to. To prevent them from joining again, you can ban them. If you change your mind, you can un-ban them.

Delete a Community

Note: Only the owner of a Community can delete it. Moderators can’t delete a Community.

  1. Open the Community you want to delete.
  2. Click More more_vert and click Delete Community.
