bkper has been absolutely perfect for me.
I have run a small business for years and always done my own bookkeeping. I fell into the gap between the simple (keeping everything in my own spreadsheets) and the ridiculously complex (Quickbooks is spectacular but I don't need a 747 to go to the store).
I tried bkper because it is already so well-integrated with Google Sheets, and I was enchanted with its simplicity and ease-of-use. I was able to build my chart of accounts on the fly. There are multiple ways to import data. The product team understands both good software AND good bookkeeping. If you understand bookkeeping, you can pretty much start right away (but take a few minutes to review the exceptionally concise training videos, it will take the process from being simply easy to downright intuitive and really make data import especially easy).
I particularly like the fact that an "account" can be anything I designate (an individual, the repair budget for a property, etc) so that preparing data for taxes becomes trivial, as the desired outputs are built right into the chart of accounts.
The ability to attach documents to transactions makes it perfect for tax records, and additionally the ability to tag and group different accounts makes it possible to slice and analyze data lots of different ways.
It worked so quickly and easily for my business that I decided to use it for my personal finances also.
By the way, the support team is nothing less than spectacular. I ran into a major problem (my own stupid mistake) and they responded to my emailed request for assistance within minutes and undid significant damage within 2 hours. It is, quite literally, the most responsive tech support I have ever experienced.
The software is so intuitive that you will probably never need it, but it's nice to know it's there.
If you are a freelancer or have a small business and you are looking for an inexpensive bookkeeping solution that "just works" and you can get started with, you really don't need anything else.
