Overview
Note: this tool utilizes google scripts api to automate some of the tasks of maintaining captions and lists of images, drawings and tables. It's still in early development so please use with care and at your own risk. If after using it you see some unwanted changes in your document, you can always use the document version history to restore the earlier version of the document.

This google docs plugin will, when instructed to do so, attempt to find any prior captions on images, drawings and tables and use them to extract their caption text and will then attempt to replace old captions with new ones with same format, styling and automatic increments so that your image and table captions look all the same. Any such generated captions are bookmarked so that after captioning it, you can insert lists of tables and lists of images anywhere in your document with links to those tables or images.

All of these features are achieved through standard use of the google docs api, which unfortunately doesn't support setting custom properties on elements like tables and images. This means that in order to make it possible to exclude some Images and Tables from captioning, the tool will change some ordinary properties, more specifically, for:
- Images and Drawings -> it will change the ALT TEXT property of the image type element
- Tables -> it will change the border color of the table by 1 (which shouldn't be noticeable) so that tables with even color are marked as caption, and those with odd color number are marked as non caption.

While this works, you should also be aware that changing the border colors of tables after captioning, might mess up this functionality and result in loss of some of the captions. If that happens, revert the document to prior version and mark those tables which were affected as "Caption" again.

There are some other limitations of this tool, too numerous to list, but here are a few known:
- tool cannot caption image or table which is the first element in a document (i.e. no paragraphs before or after) e.g. you finish the document by pasting a picture at the end without even a single line of empty text below the image and you click "caption document". The tool will in such a scenario skip the last image in the document. To fix this, simply always make sure that there is at least 1 line of text (even empty line will do) before and after any picture in your document
- tool can mistake a paragraph before or after the picture as "old caption text" and re-use it in the new caption if there are no paragraph breaks between image and text above below. The best option is to stick to format like e.g.

text text text
text text text
(empty line)
  (Image)
 (caption)
(empty line)
text text text
text text text

or

text text text
text text text
(empty line)
 (caption)
  (Image)
(empty line)
text text text
text text text

- also, note that recognizing old captions can be very difficult if you've merged multiple documents into 1 and they used different formatting and styling for captions... The tool will try to match using regex both below and above any image, but to write a regex that matches any possible format might be more effort then to simply retype some of the lost captions...

The main purpose of this tool is not to create captions from badly or not homogeneously formatted/styled text, but rather to help you maintain, reformat and re enumerate captions once they are in the document. e.g. so that you wouldn't have to go through image by image and manually correct the Image number after you've just inserted a new image in the middle of the document.

Anyway, I hope it works out for you, and if not, I'm sorry but it helps me a lot...
