Overview
In it's simplest form, Doc Variables allow you to quickly add a variable to any document in any style. A sidebar interface generates a form which can be filled into replace the variable(s) with the values entered. Great tool for creating templates that might be shared across a team to create consistent output (e.g. contracts, on-boarding information, or client reports).

Latest Feature: Create multiple documents with the same template using a Google Sheet as the source of values for your variables (similar to a mail merge). This feature is available for trial and subscribers users only.

Note: Doc Variables remains free, but a subscription is required after 20 uses. Non-subscribers will still be able to use all the basic features of Doc Variables with a delay prior to applying variables.

 Example Variable Syntaxes:

${Variable Name}
${Variable Name::~Default Value} ("Default Value" will be pre-filled)
${Textarea Name::textarea::~Add this text as default content.}
${Select Variable::options::One,~Two,Three} (Two will be selected)
${Other Doc::file} (Imports a separate document)
${My Logo::image::width=200,height=200} (Adds an image from your drive with the width of 200 and height of 200)

Very easy to use and does that job really well. I've looked for other ways of solving this for us, and haven't found anything better yet.

Works really well and would recommend. I'd have no problem in paying, but for about 25 uses for just one variable over the last three years, the plans don't make sense for us.

Thanks for the review... there is no need to subscribe if you don't use it that often. You will just need to wait a few seconds before applying variables. The plans are meant to encourage people with a lot of daily uses to support the product.

Doc Variables has definitely helped me be more productive and provide a repeatable process & customer experience for our team. Most of it's "core" features are stable at this point. I've been excited to use the new calculations feature, but I've found it to be buggy, so that's a drawback. Overall, it's a great tool though. I rely on it daily!

I was really hoping this would allow a dynamic value in a document that could be replaced later. This would be IMMENSELY helpful as someone who writes a lot of TTRPG character sheets, as I could put all of the characters literal variables such as their ability scores or their level as a variable that can be dynamically changed en mass. however, it seems to be a glorified find & replace feature, permanently replacing all text of the given "variable" with the data you put in for it. If this feature ever changes, or if I have misunderstood, I will change my review.

Did you check the "Save as copy" when applying the variables? I hardly ever substitute variables within the document. Most of the use cases are with a document that is used as a template and exports new copies as the output. For your use case, however, you should check out the Doc Merge feature (click on the link in the popup). You could have a spreadsheet with all your character data, and export new versions of all the characters as data changes.

Thank you for the great tool first. The tool is great to have but lacks of usability. As far as my experience, one has only 1 shot to set all the variables values on the document. It will be very helpful is the edition flexibility of the variables are at the same level as the edition flexibility of the document itself. One can change the variables, settings, values, as simple as changing a word of the document.

If you save the template as a copy you do not need to replace the variables in the document.

I love it however, I work at a school and tried to help one of the secretaries use it and it says she needs an administer permission. That's weird because we work for the same school board.... please advise.
