Overview
Fountainize lets you write simple text and convert it into a beautifully formatted script all with the press of a button. Collaborative screenwriting has never been this easy!

Fountainize is based on the Fountain markup language. By writing your text following a simple set of rules, Fountainize is able to determine what should be a character, dialogue, action, or any other part of a script. Don't worry though! The rules are easy. For example:

Character: Write in all caps, ex. SAMANTHA
Scene: Start the line with 'int.' or 'ext.' (no quotations of course!)
Dialogue: The line after a character or parenthetical is always considered dialogue

See? The rules are designed to speed up your workflow and let Fountainize do the dirty work for you. Whenever you feel like turning your text into screenplay, just hit the button and voila! It's done.

Fountainize was built specifically so you can reap all the benefits of Google Docs while still making professional looking screenplays. Now, Fountainize won't replace professional screenwriting software (it doesn't do continued dialogue or exceptions to rules*) but it is the BEST tool for efficiently writing drafts or personal projects. And of course, working with friends!

Happy writing!

I'm a starting-out filmmaker but I can't shell out the bucks for the professional programs so I used this. Here's what I think: Pros: Makes formatting super easy. Easy to use. Has a cool name. Lets you write screenplays. Cons: A big buggy. Sometimes things won't format right and you may have to delete a line of text and retype it and hit the format button again. Not too often and it's no major deal but it's something. That's about it. My only main complaint is that bug. But I really enjoy the program, and it makes screenwriting on Google Docs a breeze.

This is a wonderful tool. It could use a couple of upgrades. Page numbers and adding (CON'T) to dialog that spans pages. I love everything else. Thanks.

It's a very helpful app, however it's now giving me and my friend an error stating it cannot find the function in the text when we try to mark up everything in our document. We aren't sure what to do about it as we've made sure to keep everything spaced and formatted correctly for the program to do its work.

Hi Jordan, I recently discovered this issue and believe I solved it. I've submitted the change to Google, hopefully it will be approved soon and work again. Thanks for your support!

This is a good idea, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. I understand that users can't enter elements with a shortcut, but when either I or my writing partner (using a different OS) try to convert elements using the addon it generates the the error "Invalid argument: searchPattern." It converts about 40% of the text, and the page count is way off. We both love the idea of this, and hope this problem can get fixed going forward. Or just let users convert with a shortcut, and make sure the formatting gives an accurate industry-standard page count.

Hi Amy! Thanks for the feedback. I haven't encountered this issue but I'll look into it and hopefully release an update so you can continue to use it!

Same as John O'Neill's review. I installed the add-on and the only option available is 'Help'. After a few minutes of tinkering, managed to find a solution that worked for me. My solution is to reinstall the add-on. Giving 4 stars because it does not work right away for me. Other than that, thanks for the add-on!

Thanks Muhamad! For anyone else with this 'Help only' issue - look not under "Add-ons" but for a separate "Fountainize" option at the end of the main menu. Happy writing!

Oh, and for those wondering, I don't have any kind of adblocker installed.

Very very good add-on. The only one I know I'll keep using for years.

Installed the addon and the only option it has is "Help". I've tried reloading the page and relaunching my browser entirely and still nothing.

Hello RandomStuff, I'm the developer of Fountainize. Sometimes there's an issue with ad blockers, but I suggest looking not under "Add-ons" but for a separate "Fountainize" item on your main menu. That's confused people before!

Great, and I mean great add on. A lot of screenwriting software exists for Windows and Mac but pretty much nothing for Linux. Now I can work on Linux and without the hefty price tag. Sure it's missing features found in Final Draft, but for something that's free and works well, this is a gem. The markup is simple enough, and being a Google Doc, I can collaborate with another writer who is a three-hour drive away. With the simple markup, it's a low learning curve to teach my partner how a script is formatted and how to write it so that Fountainize can format it upon completion.

Love it. (Turn off your ad-blocker if it's not working for you and reload the page.....)
