I'm editing my previous review. In short, I love the approach, I love the professional product (compared to say, Doctopus, which will never be adopted by the large majority of teachers) and I love the responsiveness of the company. Even more, as an English teacher, I love the depth of useful feedback I'm able to deliver. A real benefit to students. However, I discovered that the process of marking essays was WAY too time-consuming. It was frustrating because so much of the time went to endless clicking. I'm absolutely convinced that you can fix this with simple adjustments. For example, if I click to get to a screen with a text box, put the cursor in the text box so I can just start typing. Don't make me move my hands to the mouse, click in the box, then move my hands back to the keyboard. Do that several times per student X 30 students and it adds up. There are multiple examples of things like this that can be fixed. If I could mark papers in 150% of the time it takes me on paper, it might be worth it for the great feedback I can provide. But at 200 or 300% of the time, there's just no way. I sent you a document with 11 or 12 suggestions, all to do with speeding the process. I'm setting the product aside for now, but I'll be looking for your updates. I know that you are limited by the available APIs. I understand this month's GC update added additional APIs. I hope that helps.

Thank you for a very thorough and fair review Mark! We really appreciate your insights and are going to work even harder to earn a 5-star rating from you. JoeZoo is committed to building better tools for teachers - ones that are effortless to learn and use, and time-saving. Teacher time is too valuable to lose using tech and grading so we're going to do something about it. Stay tuned as there are some more great tools and features in the works!

I really like this app in that it provides great and quick feedback for students, what I don't understand is why it only focuses on English? For example, I'm a physics teacher, and what I love using it for is highlighting key terms that have been used correctly or incorrectly. It's such a fundamental part of my subject that a lot of students don't realise is important. Using this I can, for example, highlight the word current, have the definition written in the description, have an explanation in the How-to-fix, and then even have a link to a clip explaining it, for example. But I can't then create a category to put it in! I've just deleted most of the stock comments in 'Formatting' as they don't seem to be relevant for me, and I'm adding in new comments as I go. I have no knowledge of how these things work, but would it be hard to add a category and pick a colour for it? Or even just rename a current category? I can't wait until I've built up a record of comments with all the links etc- I'll be posting more feedback when I feel like I've really got to grips with it!

To "A Google User" there is great news for you already in JoeZoo. On March 13th we released the "Harry Rodger B1" build which will make non-humanities teachers, like Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics etc, very happy. You can now customize Comment Categories, changing them from preloaded names like "Grammar" to anything you prefer, like "Forces of Motion". We made that improvement directly from Harry's feedback and there are more of his, and other teacher ideas appearing in our app every 3 - 4 weeks. Our advice for Google Administrators is install JoeZoo for your entire district before our big news comes out! Enjoy JoeZoo.

As a fellow science teacher, I agree completely. Even more useful would be a way to share comment sets. For example, some way to look at another teacher's comment set and, if I like it for my assessment needs, to import the set into Joezoo. I am really focused on finding ways for us all to stop pedaling so hard reinventing the same wheel and this app seems to offer that, but only if the ability to pre-load comments useful to each teacher is expanded. Categories for separate types of comments is also a top priority. Thanks, Carl and Harry for looking into this!

Hi Harry! Happy 2017. Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. We really appreciate it as we're sure that many teachers - who don't teach a humanities subject - love JoeZoo but don't see it as an easy fit in subject like physics or mathematics. With your help, we'd like to start making JoeZoo a feedback app that can work for any teacher, at any grade level and of any subject. If you, and your non-Humanities colleagues, would like to work with us, we can start to design JoeZoo to meet the needs of physics teachers, with the categories and comments they might like. Please look out for my email as I'd like to make this a top priority for our design team. Thanks again and if any other of our fans would like to help us build comment sets for other subjects, please add a comment here or via support on our website or our add-on. This is exciting - thanks Harry!

I love the flexiblity with the rubrics and the fact that the descriptors pop up so you can add more comments, but there are still too many clicks to get to the actual grading process. The richness of the feedback tools, especially the monkey checker, is well done; I LOVE that the tool offers "fix it" suggestions for students-no other tool out there offers this as far as I know. I believe that the tool used to color change the rubric on the student's doc once it was graded; I miss that visual cue to the student. Additionally, I go back and forth between JoeZoo and OrangeSlice for rubric tools and the one feature that OrangeSlice has that I find exceptionally helpful is that once the grading process is completed, the name of the document is changed to include the grade and the rubric itself changes color to indicate grade. I know that JoeZoo allows a rich exporting tool, but, again, the quick and easy visual cue is very helpful for a busy teacher needing to get grading finished and returned to the students. Overall, four stars for the capabilities of the tool; I share and lead PD on this tool regularly. I only wish the process of getting to the doc/class/rubric included fewer clicks. Thank you for always providing excellent feedback and listening to your users with attentiveness. Excellent customer feedback!

Thank you so much for your feedback Shannon. That you took the time to share your thoughts in such detail is truly appreciated and has a big impact on how we improve JoeZoo. Thanks to the feedback from you and many of our 1.4 million users, there are some significant improvements on the way in the New Year. Lots of those pesky clicks are being eliminated from our add-on and we're adding more time-saving features to our app. We can't wait to show it to you all! 2017 is going to be a great year for the entire JoeZoo Community. Happy Holidays!

I loved this when I first started using it but can no longer return the rubric to the student with their document.

Hi Dana. Prior to our last update, a large number of users asked us to make it possible for multiple people - such as multiple teachers or students - to add feedback to or grade a doc with JoeZoo. To make that possible, we had to move the graded rubrics from being inserted into the doc to being viewable in our add-on. In the way we're permitted to integrate with Google Apps, we would not have been able to reliably insert multiple graded rubrics into a single doc. Now, students can simply open their JoeZoo add-on and see multiple graded rubrics - such as when co-teacher grade each doc - and comments from multiple people - such as when they receive multiple rounds of peer and teacher feedback. With each new release of JoeZoo we try to include new features and improvements that will please as many teachers and students as possible, but with over 1.2 million users it can prove challenging. We love the challenge and hope that some of ones on the way will help you to fall in love with JoeZoo again. Thank you for your feedback. We really value it.

To JoeZoo Express administrators; you have changed the way that students access their evaluated rubrics and now we have a major problem. After the teacher evaluates an assignment, it used to be possible to insert the corrected rubric back into the assignment and students would get an email as well with the rubric. Now, students have to go to the Add-on and go to JoeZoo Express and then see their Rubrics and messages or comments. The problem lies in the fact that when students submit their Google Docs back through the Google Classroom, the permission for students become "View Only", in that case students can't see the Add-On button on their document so they can't access JoeZoo Express. Please change this new feature back to the ability of inserting the evaluated rubric into the document and inform the student with an email containing a link to the assignment and/or the evaluated rubric. Thank you for your continued effort to improve.

I'm having the same problem...is this getting fixed? Major pain!
October 27, 2016
Hi Nour! Can you submit a support request through the top of your add-on or our website. We'd like to look into this issue further. If your school or students have installed the JoeZoo add-on then using Google Classroom shouldn't affect their access to JoeZoo in their Google Docs. I've asked the support team to look out for your request. Thanks.

Hi Nour! Thanks for the kind words about JoeZoo. We're happy to report that the new JoeZoo is live and the Rubric Builder will let you input the R-4 scale with +/- easily. Check out this tutorial video https://goo.gl/eXR8zH to see how to build rubrics in the new JoeZoo.

I have really enjoyed using Joe Zoo. Reason I am only giving 4 stars is because when Joe Zoo updated, it now pulls all my old Google Classroom classes, and does not show which period/section a class is anymore. I teach multiple sections of classes, so having the flexibility to edit the name, or remove old classes from my Class list would be helpful.

Hi Amanda! We'd like to see if we can make your 4 stars go to 5 :-). One of our engineers just applied a fix that might block that Google Classroom bug flowing into JoeZoo. Can you check to see if your archived classes no longer appear when you open our add-on? Thank you.
October 25, 2016
Thanks for the feedback and 4 stars Amanda. It is unfortunate but that bug of duplicate classes is coming from Google Classroom itself and flowing into JoeZoo because we're integrated with it. We were the first integration partner to report it last week and have escalated that bug with them as it is affecting our amazing users. Here is the link showing that Google has yet to fix this bug https://code.google.com/a/google.com/p/apps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=4859&colspec=Stars%20Opened%20ID%20Type%20Status%20Summary%20API%20Owner. We wish we could do more but it is in Google's hands and once fixed you should not see any duplicate of archived classes showing up in JoeZoo. Thank you for your patience and support.

While I like its integration with Google Docs, I found JoeZoo's feedback interface too time-consuming. Having used a different product marketed primarily as a plagiarism detector that offers drag-and-drop feedback, I'd happily leave that product behind if this feature were added to JoeZoo. Y'all are doing great work: keep it up!

Hi Lyle. Thanks for the feedback and request. Was that drag and drop tool a Google Docs add-on and if so which one? Google gives add-on developers a very specific and limited number of ways to integrate with its apps, and to our knowledge, drag and drop functionality is not permitted inside its apps. Let us know which add-on you're comparing JoeZoo Express to and we'll get back to you within 1 day to tell you how they do it and whether we can add drag and drop functionality to our add-on. We look forward to hearing from you.

Too many clicks to be able to leave feedback. I can do what I need to do faster with comments. I had high hopes, but this tool will not improve my efficiency in commenting on student work, which is what I had hoped for.

Hi Kari. Thanks for your feedback. We just launched a new JoeZoo on the weekend that has simplified feedback and grading, while adding new tools for self, peer and teacher feedback. We wanted to send you information about all the improvements but we could not find your JoeZoo user account. If you'd like to see the improvements before installing JoeZoo, here are our new tutorial videos on Youtube https://goo.gl/zKNOKJ. Have a great school year!

I was hoping the new release would be operational by now. Right now this is slower than what I have been doing already. So right now, this is OK, but I am confident that upgrades will make it an excellent product.

We completely understand your anticipation Lance and we're sure that most of our users feel the same way. We take it as a compliment since no body anxiously awaits a bad product, right? I can tell you our entire team is working really hard on the release. To deliver all the new tools and features that our phenomenal community of users asked for required a complete rebuild of JoeZoo from the ground up, and by the time it launches, we will have done it in about 3 months. We appreciate your support and enthusiasm for JoeZoo and look forward to earning a 5-star review from you and all our users this school year. Have a great school year!

It seemed like the sync with Google classroom would be more complete than it is. There's a ton of clicking: open Classroom, open Doc, open JoeZoo, click for grade or feedback, drop downs galore, click click click. Then, it doesn't sync back with Classroom to record the grade you added, therefore there's no easy record (that I see) of all the class's grades. It'd be awesome if the JoeZoo roster allowed you to click the student's name then opened their assignment there, but no. You have to go back into Classroom to do it and go through the whole process again. I had such high hopes, but they were dashed after grading my first paper.

Totally agree. Love the app but it is a pain in the butt having to go through all the steps to move on to evaluate another student's work. The having to flip b/w Classroom and re-open the app (and then all the following steps) makes it cumbersome and makes me question whether to use JoeZoo - it doesn't feel very efficient to me.
September 24, 2016
Totally agree. If I'm grading a class of 28 essays, the time to open and click through all of the set-up is taking the time that I could just do it on pen and paper. I hope Joe Zoo fixes this, especially for high school teachers!

Sorry to hear you haven't had a good experience so far Kate. While it may seem that we could/should integrate with Google Classroom in a specific way, Google limits the features with which add-on makers can integrate. Each time Google updates these APIs, our team looks for reliable ways to make grading simpler and faster for teachers and launches improvements within a few weeks. For example, most of the drop down menus and clicks will be gone in the upcoming release so we hope you'll enjoy those improvements. And if you'd like to see all the feedback and grading data you gave to your class today, you can follow the tutorial video we made for that and published to our Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnSRXGJRy44&list=PLpoKk_NVDYnQmqFiuMmVcJhXQ8gnr8Tu8&index=9. We include a link to our Youtube Channel in our 'Welcome' email and recommend that users subscribe to it as we make tutorial videos for every tool and feature and update them frequently. If you'd like to contribute some more ideas on how we can improve JoeZoo, we'd welcome them at support[at]joezooapp.com. Stay tuned for the all-new JoeZoo!
